How did you get started with weightlifting / bodybuilding / fitness?

I always loved physical exercise. I’ve been an active person my whole life, as I grew up in the suburbs of a town. We had some forests around were my friends wand me would go running, biking and exploring. Always walking and running from place to place, kids these days mostly stay at home playing computer games or watching TV.

I entered the gym for the first time 5 years ago, when I was 21 years old – and what began as a hobby, turned into a habit and when I knew it my whole lifestyle was changed.

Do you have someone or something that motivates or inspires you? Do you have any idols?

I am my own inspiration. I drive myself to be the best what I can be, be mentally or physically. I think that motivation and inspiration is something that occurs in our head along with our fears and limitations – we just have to learn how to control them.

Looking back at your exercise career: Which training system or routine brought you the best results?

Of all the workout programs I did the best one was a power/hypertrophy mixed training inspired by the PHAT from Dr. Layne Norton.

How does your current routine look like?

  • Monday: Pull Day 1+ Abs
  • Tuesday: Push Day 1
  • Wednesday: Legs Day 1+ Abs
  • Thursday: Rest
  • Friday: Pull Day 2
  • Saturday: Push Day 2+ Abs
  • Sunday: Legs Day 2

Do you prefer traditional cardio training or HIIT when dieting?

In my last contest preparation I was doing fasted cardio and HIIT post workout. For normal cardio I do between 40 and 50 minutes per session. HIIT amounts to 5 – 15 minutes max.

If you had to pick only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

  • Bench Press
  • Squat
  • Deadlift

The big 3 – they are pretty self-explanatory. Countless great physiques have been built over the years with those 3 as a solid base.

What is your diet like?

I eat clean year round. My diet is always changing and I use various approaches to reach my goals: Carb Cycling, Keto, Progressive Calories etc. But there’s consistency in what I am doing: something I avoid lactose and gluten since I have somewhat of an intolerance to them. I usually don’t eat processed foods. That’s it.

  • 1 Meal: Egg Whites + Oats + Fruit + Almond Butter
  • 2 Meal: Shake with Whey Isolate, Carbs, MCTs powder.
  • 3 Meal: Beef + Sweet Potato + Avocado + Salad
  • 4 Meal: Tilapia + Wild Rice
  • 5 Meal: Pre Workout Shake – Whey Isolate, Carbs, MCTs powder.
  • 6 Meal: Post Workout Shake – Whey Isolate, Carbs, Creatine
  • 7 Meal: Turkey Breast + Rice or Potato + Broccoli
  • 8 Meal: Egg Whites + Whole Eggs + Almond Butter

Do you take supplements? If so, how does your current supplementation look like?

Paulo Fernandes PhotoshootYes. Currently I am recovering from an injury but I’ll start my offseason really soon and then I’ll return to my normal supplement routine:

Do you use any pre-workout supplements or boosters? What is the most important aspect in those kind of products for you?

Well, I use them sporadically but they’re not on my top priority list. When I use them, then it is just for NO increase and nutrient partitioning.

If you had to pick only 3 supplements, what would they be and why?

  • BCAA: Improves protein synthesis, recovery muscle repair. I take BCAAs between my meals and intra workout.
  • Omega 3: Countless health, benefits (e.g. joint health, improving cholesterol, increase fat oxidation)
  • Creatine: Improved recovery, stamina and strength.

Do you have a mantra or do you act on a specific maxim/ lifestyle philosophy?

Do you have a favourite quote?

“Hard work pays off.”

Are you religious?

Let’s just say that I believe in a higher power. I don’t necessarily believe in religion as its represented. I have faith and hope.

Are you currently working on any interesting projects you’d like finish in the near future?

I’m launching my own website soon, which will be accompanied by an official Youtube channel. But I’m always thinking about the future, so there are several projects on the paper for the next years.

What was the single best decision in orthing that brought you the most in life? What advice would you like give to our readers?

Believing that you can achieve your goals. If you have dreams, but you are doubting that you can fulfil them, you are not going anywhere. Get yourself out there!
